Our favorite shops to bring home a piece of Quercy
Foie gras, Malbec, locally roasted coffee and fine books, all within walking distance
On the last day, everyone wants to leave with a piece of Cahors in their suitcase: a jar of foie gras, a fine bottle of Malbec, locally roasted coffee, or a book on the Lot. Here are the shops we love visiting ourselves, all on foot.
1. Valette, the foie gras house (place Chapou facing the cathedral · ≈ 3 min walk)
Right in front of the Cathedral, at 34 place Chapou, Valette Foie Gras is a family business established in 1920 where you'll find the finest Périgord gastronomy: foie gras, truffles, pâtés, terrines. You won't find anything to help keep your waistline, but it's a great place for quality products!
2. Les Petits Producteurs (place Champollion · ≈ 4 min walk)
This is our top recommendation: at 4 place Champollion, around fifteen Lot producers collectively sell their products at producer prices. Cured meats, confit, foie gras, Cahors wines, honeys, jams, beers and liqueurs: everything is crafted nearby, and you can often sample on site. Open 9:30 to 19:00, Sundays 10:00 to 15:00.
3. Grains de Folie, Old Cahors coffee roaster (rue Nationale · ≈ 3 min walk)
At 127 rue Nationale, just steps from our place, this coffee roaster roasts its beans on site (Brazil, Ethiopia, Colombia...). You'll also find teas, spices, and mustards, alongside a cozy tearoom to enjoy a coffee with a pastry.
4. Maison Sudreau & Malbec near Pont Valentré (5 to 15 min walk)
A local Cahors institution founded in 1897, Maison Sudreau (91 boulevard Léon Gambetta, plus a stand at Les Halles) offers foie gras, black truffles and cooked local dishes, with its wine cellar right next door. On your way back from Pont Valentré, stop by the Château Lagrézette shop (Allées des Soupirs): range tastings are complimentary, Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00–13:00 and 14:00–18:00.
5. For book lovers: Librairie Calligrammes (rue du Maréchal Joffre · ≈ 6 min walk)
Founded in 1979, Calligrammes (75 rue du Maréchal Joffre) is the independent general bookstore of Cahors. Ask for recommendations on a beautiful book about the Lot region, a hiking guide, or a local novel: it's a souvenir that won't weigh down your suitcase... well, almost!
Les Petits Producteurs: 9:30–19:00, Sunday 10:00–15:00. Coliviandes: Tuesday to Saturday, 9:00–13:00 and 15:00–19:00. Boutique Château Lagrézette: Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00–13:00 and 14:00–18:00.
Do your shopping the day before departure: on Sundays, several shops close early or do not open.
