Lalbenque truffle market: Quercy's black gold, every winter Tuesday
One of France's most famous truffle markets, 25 minutes away
Staying with us between December and early March? Then reserve your Tuesday afternoon! The Lalbenque truffle market is one of the most famous in France, and its hushed, almost secret atmosphere is unlike any other market.
1. An unchanging ritual, every Tuesday from December to early March
The market takes place every Tuesday, from early December to early March (for the 2026-2027 season: December 1 to March 2). Public activities begin around 13:30. The highlight is the wholesale market starting at 14:45: truffle growers align their wicker baskets on long tables in the street, and professional buyers negotiate quietly.
2. Buying your truffle without being a pro: the retail market
No need to be a top chef to leave with a truffle! The retail market takes place under the town hall square starting at 14:30: you can buy a small Quercy black truffle and ask producers for advice. Our tip: place it with a few eggs in a sealed jar in the fridge for 24 hours, and prepare yourself an unforgettable truffle omelet.
3. Truffle hunting demonstration with a truffle dog
Around 15:30, meet in front of the truffle house for a hunting demonstration: you'll see how the dog (or sometimes a pig!) unearths truffles hidden at the foot of oak trees. Children love it. On the way back to Cahors, observe the truffle oak fields bordered by dry stone walls: the entire Causse landscape tells the story of the truffle.
Every Tuesday from early December to early March (2026-2027 season: Dec 1 to Mar 2). Activities around 13:30, retail market at 14:30, wholesale at 14:45, hunting demonstration around 15:30.
Arrive around 13:30: parking is easier and you can watch the baskets being set up.
