Musée Henri-Martin & our plan for a rainy day

Painting, archaeology and memories of Gambetta, indoors, without driving

Raining over Quercy? Don't panic, it's the perfect time to open the door of the Cahors museum. Between the luminous canvases of Henri Martin, major archaeological pieces and memories of local icon Léon Gambetta, you can easily spend a wonderful morning indoors.

1. Henri Martin, the painter who brought the light of the Lot to his canvases

The museum is named after post-impressionist painter Henri Martin, who fell in love with the Lot valley. His large canvases with juxtaposed brushstrokes make you want to go for a stroll right after the visit. Around his works, the museum also displays creations by Quercy artists, archaeological and historical collections, and the Léon Gambetta collection, born in Cahors. A temporary exhibition changes every year.

2. Practical info: opening hours & the last-hour tip

The museum is open from Wednesday to Monday (closed Tuesday), from 11:00 to 18:00, except Saturday when it opens in the afternoon (14:00–18:00 off-season, 14:00–20:00 in July-August). Admission costs €9 (€5 reduced rate). Our tip: the "last-hour" rate at €2 starting at 17:00, perfect for a first discovery at the end of the day.

3. Our "rainy day" plan without taking the car

Morning: Saint-Étienne Cathedral and its cloister (4 min walk), then a tour under Les Halles at Place Galdemar (open Tuesday to Saturday 7:30–13:00 and 15:30–19:00, Sunday 9:00–12:30).
Lunch: a warm meal at one of our recommended restaurants (see our dining guide).
Afternoon: Musée Henri-Martin, then a wine tasting at Villa Cahors Malbec (Place François Mitterrand). Off-season, it welcomes you without an appointment from 17:00 to 19:00, Tuesday to Saturday.
Evening: back to the accommodation, with a good book from Librairie Calligrammes (see our shopping guide).

Wednesday to Monday (closed Tuesday), 11:00–18:00; Saturday 14:00–18:00 (14:00–20:00 in July-August). Entry €9 (reduced €5), €2 from 17:00 onwards.

Save the museum for the end of the day: starting at 17:00, admission costs only €2.
